About Área de Proteção Ambiental da Baleia Franca

Located along the southeastern coast of Brazil, primarily spanning the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Baleia Franca was established to safeguard the marine and coastal ecosystems vital to the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) population. This environmental protection area encompasses important breeding and calving grounds where these whales migrate during the austral winter months, attracting scientists, tourists, and whale watchers. The geography includes sandy beaches, rocky shores, estuaries, and marine waters that support a diverse array of marine species including dolphins, sea turtles, and migratory seabirds. The area's coastal landscapes offer significant ecological value with rich biodiversity and fragile habitats requiring strict preservation measures. Established in the late 1980s, the protection area contributes to local conservation efforts balancing sustainable tourism, fishing activities, and environmental education. Visitors are drawn to the region largely for whale watching, especially from June to November when the whales are most visible near shore. In addition to marine wildlife viewing, the area is also popular for birding, kayaking, and coastal hiking. The APA Baleia Franca highlights Brazil's commitment to marine conservation and provides an invaluable opportunity to witness the majestic southern right whale in its natural environment, promoting awareness about marine ecosystems and the need for their protection.
